Knauf Metal manufactures a wide range of quality steel stud and track profiles for different wall systems applications in our Beenleigh plant, in Queensland.

The maximum heights achievable for steel stud wall systems are based on sound engineering principles which take into account relevant Australian Standards and the Building Code of Australia.

When selecting which size steel stud and track to use in a particular wall system it is crucial to allow for the following factors:

2. Lateral wind loading

3. Vertical loading

4. Shelf loading

5. Acoustic Performance

Simple Internal Walls

Products can be selected for the construction of simple internal walls by referring to our Steel Walls Systems Tables, these tables are based on 0.25kPa (working) internal lateral wind pressures.

These tables are for non-fire rated walls with no vertical loading or shelf loading. The acoustic performance will depend on the layers of board & insulation used.

Fire Rating

Fire Rated Internal Walls are designed using a minimum of 0.35kPa (working) internal lateral wind pressures. The framing itself does not have a specified fire rating. The Fire Resistance Level or (FRL) of the wall is dependent on the number and type of boards fixed to the frame.

External Walls

Shelf Loading

Products selected for walls which will have shelf loading require special consideration. Shelf loading introduces varied forces which are transferred to the wall system. For selection of Knauf Metal components to be used in walls with shelf loading contact Knauf Technical Team.

Acoustic Walls

Products selected for acoustic walls are typically selected based on the acoustic performance of the entire system once Fire Rating has been allowed for. There are many ways to enhance the acoustic performance of a wall system, including selection of the Knauf Acoustic Stud.

Deflection

Knauf Metal Wall Systems typically allow for a maximum of H/240 lateral deflection. The H is the wall height expressed in (mm). Therefore for a wall 2400mm high, 2400 is divided by 240 resulting in lateral deflection of up to 10mm at maximum design pressures. Some types of brittle wall boards or finishing products e.g tiles, may require less deflection of the wall to avoid cracking of the product.

Lateral deflection can be minimised by designing for H/360 or H/500 etc. For selection of Knauf Metal components to be used in walls with specific lateral deflection limits contact Knauf Technical Team.

Vertical Load Bearing Walls do not allow for any vertical deflection Non-load Bearing Walls can accommodate vertical deflection when the correct products are selected and installed. The required amount of vertical deflection is determined by the design of the supporting structure.

1. The Knauf Acoustic Stud is manufactured from 0.50bmt material only.
2. Nogging Track is manufactured from 0.70bmt material only.
3. Slotted Deflection Head Track is only available in 92mm, 1.15bmt. Knauf Metal can custom roll-form any size steel stud, track or deflection head track within the 51-150mm sizes to a maximum of 1.55bmt.
